The USB Security Key currently sold by the Webstore (Security Key NFC by Yubico) uses modern and secure WebAuthn/FIDO2 authentication standards.
The Duo Universal Prompt, used with nearly all university applications, supports these standards.
NOTE: The UIC VPN currently does not support the use of security keys. Technology Solutions is actively working to enable compatibility.
Additionally, the NetID Center does not support registering security keys. Registration must be done via a Duo Universal Prompt.
If you plan to order a large quantity, please email webstore@illinois.edu BEFORE making the purchase.

Hardware tokens and security keys are small, portable devices that can be used for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). If you don't have a device compatible with the Duo Mobile app, or do not want to use a personal device for MFA, you can use a hardware token purchased from the Webstore instead. Hardware tokens also do not depend on connectivity to the internet.
Personal Purchase vs. Departmental Purchase
Before buying a token as a personal purchase you should consult with your Unit/Department to determine if a departmental purchase is more appropriate. NOTE: Do NOT use a University P-card to make this purchase because it will charge tax. For departmental purchase, please click on SHOP UNIT PURCHASE in the top left corner of the main WebStore screen and then search for "2FA" in the search bar. After you choose which type of token(s) you want, the payment option will ask for a CFOP for payment and this will avoid the tax being charged.
How it Works1. Access a University resource that is protected by 2FA.2. Enter your username/password.3. Select Yubikey from the drop down
4. Insert your Yubikey in the USB drive and press the gold button to logon
How to Associate with your University IdentityOnce a token is purchased, and before it can be used with 2FA, it must be associated with a University identity. To learn how to associate a token to your identity refer to: https://answers.uillinois.edu/2fa-token
Additional InformationUnit purchases are considered property of the University and token use must comply with all appropriate policies. All support issues with tokens should be directed through the appropriate University Help Desk. More information about the tokens and 2FA can be found at https://answers.uillinois.edu/2fa-token
Faulty tokens will be replaced up to 6 months from the time of purchase. Please reference your purchase receipt number when requesting a replacement.
